There are so many different messaging apps that it can be difficult to know what to choose. Most of the time, we will choose something that our friends and family use - but that isn’t always the best choice. When determining which messaging platform is the best, something to look for is end-to-end encryption. This encryption prevents copies of your communications from being stored on servers - and opens you up to a potential leak. So let’s take a look at and find out is Signal better than Whatsapp? And is Facebook Messenger safe to use?
LineThe East and Southeast Asia are lovers of Line, a system that includes the coveted end-to-end encryption but offers security tools, games, media portals, mobile phone plans, healthcare consultancy, and even VoIP calls. It is free to use but isn’t as popular as some of the other chat apps. Signal When it comes to the most secure chat apps, Signal has a solid reputation. Government organizations and security experts alike all say that Signal is the best free IM app for desktop computers, iOS, and Android. The Signal protocol is considered to be the gold standard when it comes to mobile encryption. Not only does it offer end-to-end encryption, but you can also make use of password security, self-destructing messages, PIN access, and more. WhatsappWhataspp is one of the most popular chat apps for mobile users, and they use a super-secure encryption protocol that was created by Open Whisper Systemes (the people behind Signal). With WhatsApp, only the sender and receiver have the keys to access any messages, and you can use a Verify Security Code to verify that your communications in the app are encrypted. Whatsapp does have several risks including that mobile phone numbers are required. Facebook MessengerFacebook Messenger is available across multiple devices, and many people use it as a way to keep in touch with people on the go. There have been several data leaks from Facebook over the last few years. One of the features that users of Facebook Messenger enjoy is the Secret Conversations feature - which must be manually activated. In 2018 Facebook was outed for collecting information about its user, like importing their phone contacts, and have done it since too. Facebook Messenger has been proven time and again to be accessing user data. Facebook Messenger doesn’t offer as many security features as many of the other available chat apps, so for most people should be the last choice. ThreemaThreema is a paid app that isn’t as popular are some of the other chat apps, but it offers a whole host of communication options and works well for organizations. With Threema all messages are deleted from the server, and your contact list is stored on your device. You can protect conversations with a PIN and use it anonymously if you want to. Threema hasn’t shown to have any security risks and puts its emphasis on privacy and security. As your children grow up, they are more likely to start using chat apps, and while you might be tempted to read their conversations, the main priority should be knowing that their details are secure. Online safety can be a great lesson for Homeschool.
